Company History of Peony Nursery Peony Shop Holland
Peony Shop nowadays solely focuses on growing exclusive, high quality peonies. It hasn’t always been this way. The company has a rich history starting back in 1875.
The company started in 1875 with Simon Scholten who was growing vegetables for a living. He was succeeded by his son Dirk Scholten, who took over the company in 1920. He grew vegetables as well as flower bulbs (tulips). His son Jan Scholten replaced him in 1947. He also grew vegetables and flower bulbs (tulips). In 1964 Jan’s son Theo joined the company and they continued to grow vegetables and flower bulbs (tulips).
In 1989 the structure of the company dramatically changed. Jan Scholten left the company and Jeremy Scholten and Tini Keeman joined. (Jeremy & Joshua are the sons of Theo Scholten & Tini Keeman.) That very year the company abandoned the growth of flower bulbs (tulips, irises and peonies). In 1995 Joshua Scholten joined the firm and in 1999 the company stopped with growing irises.
In 2001 the company made their new marketing-name & logo Peony Shop and started focusing on growing exclusive peonies. In 2002 the company opened their online Peony Shop with Peonies & Buxus. In 2003 Joshua Scholten started with breeding peonies. Than in 2004 the company started to export peonies from the Netherlands all over Europe, America and Asia.
In 2005 Tini Scholten – Keeman passed away on the 24th of March as a result of the terrible disease of gal-cancer.
In 2006 the company (Theo, Jeremy and Joshua) stopped with forcing tulips in wintertime. The company is now completely specialized in growing exclusive peonies. In 2008 we renovated the company with new cooling cells and made a display garden in our greenhouse with up to 400m2 with Peony Shop’s newest (often exclusive) peony varieties. In addition company was bought to expand peony breeding activities.
Currently our peony nursery specialized in growing and multiplying exclusive, high quality peony roots. In addition we also cut peonies mainly serving the Dutch peony flower market. Read all about us on the about us page.
On 10th September 2011, Theo Scholten passed away as a result of acute Pancreatitis. Even though he was already half-blind, he just moved on with his work and never complained about his handicaps. On 6 September, Theo was just driving his tractor on the land harvesting the first Peony roots of the season. A few days later on the night of 7-8 September he became terribly sick and fought hard as a lion for his life. Unfortunately the founder of Peony Nursery Peony Shop passed away on 10th September 2011 at the of age 62. He was born in the local village ‘Broekerhaven’ on 26th September 1948.
In 2012 – it was the first year for Jeremy & Joshua Scholten to be on their own feet, and continue with the family Peony business.
In 2014 the website was re-designed with an improved user interface and layout. The company was rebranded with a new logo and the name was changed from ‘Paionia’ to ‘Peony Shop’.
On March 10, 2015 – the company name was officially changed to Peony Shop Holland. Last year 2014 saw 25 years anniversary of the previous name V.O.F. Scholten – Keeman. Before the previous name V.O.F. Scholten – Keeman, the company was known as T.J.M. Scholten & Zn (Theo Scholten & Sons and before that as Jan Scholten & Zn (Jan Scholten & Sons).
